A special order is a promise. Track it from deposit to pickup.
Steps
Take a deposit and the customer phone number.
Enter the order and place it with the distributor the same day.
Mark it Paid and then Packing when it arrives.
Call the customer and hold the book for ten days.
If it will be late
Call the customer before they call you, with a new date.
Returns keep shelves fresh and cash flowing. Do them on a schedule.
Steps
Each quarter, list titles that have not sold in six months.
Check the return window for each publisher.
Pack, label and ship them, keeping the copy of the form.
Record credits when they arrive.
Never return
Signed copies, local author books and staff picks.
Events turn a shop into a gathering place. Plan six weeks ahead.
