How to read the numbers
Receiving is the front door of inventory. Mistakes made here follow every order for months.
Steps
Match the truck to an Inbound delivery row and assign a dock door.
Check the seal and paperwork before opening the trailer.
Count pallets and cartons against the paperwork.
Record overages, shortages and damage as exceptions at the dock, with photos.
Put away to the assigned location and press Mark received.
Update the stock line's units on hand.
Rules
No pallet is put away without a location.
Damaged goods go to the hold location, not the pick face.
Anything you cannot identify stays on the dock with a tag.
Picking is the costliest step per order, so every minute saved there pays for itself.
Steps
Start picking on the oldest ship-by first.
Pick from the pick face; ask inventory control to replenish from reserve.
Pack with the right carton and filler, and weigh it.
Label, scan and stage the order by carrier.
Press Mark shipped when the carrier takes it.
Common problems
Rolling counts catch errors early and avoid one painful annual shutdown.
Plan
Count fast movers monthly and slow movers quarterly.
Count every line after a problem delivery.
Schedule counts in quiet hours.
Method
Count the bin twice before looking at the system quantity.
Enter the counted units and let the variance work itself out.
Investigate any large variance: recent receipts, picks, returns.
Press Mark adjusted only after approval.
