How to read the numbers
Every order follows the same path. Each handoff has one owner and one thing that must be true before it passes on.
The path
Each Friday
Walk the Orders due in the next 7 days list with the supervisor and decide what to overtime, move or tell the customer about.
Quality is built in at each step, not added at the end. Three checks per run catch most problems early.
Checks
First article: measure the first piece before the batch continues.
In process: check joints and dimensions halfway through.
Final inspection: look at every unit before packing.
When a check fails
Stop the run and write what was found on the check row.
Rework only with the supervisor's approval; record rework as such.
If the cause is material or tooling, add a note to the part or product.
Running out of a part stops the whole line. A weekly stock walk keeps the reorder list honest.
Weekly walk
Count on-hand for parts marked Low
Update the On hand figure on each row
Check lead times against orders due in the next three weeks
Send the purchase orders
Setting the reorder level
Reorder level = average weekly use times lead time in weeks, plus a safety margin you can explain. Review it each quarter.
